New Asgard | Thursday

Over the last couple of weeks Wanda had been doing her best to fit into New Asgard, and helping where she could without using magic. It had been long enough that she felt comfortable here now, and had taken to dressing a little more like the Asgardians and occasionally letting someone do some truly cool braiding with her hair that Wanda would never be able to pull off on her own.

One thing she had been bad at was keeping in touch with people outside of New Asgard. Which was mostly on purpose, though she occasionally felt guilt about it. It was a dick move dropping everyone that fast, but in her mind it was for the best.

It did get lonely at times, like now when she had nothing to do but sit in her little home and try to get lost in a book. But that was the point. She had to learn to accept the loneliness, and not destroy the world in an attempt to remedy herself of it.

Marc had very firmly told Steven to leave it, frankly in a manner not at all unlike someone telling a dog to drop something they weren't meant to be chewing on. But it had been a while since Steven had last tried sending a text and he was working on new languages. So on an impulse he sent off a text to Wanda.

Greetings. It is afternoon. I am of health. Your possessions yes too?

Which, given that he was attempting to write it in Sokovian, he hoped he hadn't gotten wrong and asked her about an eel-ridden hovercraft or something.

Wanda kept her phone charged in case of emergencies, but she barely used it these days. She had to dig through a pile of books on her desk to reach it.

And it was a weird text to receive. She could read it, but it barely made sense.

Are you okay?

She wrote, in English.

On the one hand Steven was disappointed that he'd apparently gotten the words wrong since the message he was trying to send was that he was, in fact, all right. On the other he was touched that Wanda would be concerned, especially since she had her own things to worry about.

He texted back in English.

Yes. Sorry. New year's resolution. Trying to learn new languages. Hope I didn't say anything offensive?

Ohhhhhhh, okay. That made a lot more sense then him being kidnapped and trying to speak in Sokovian code.

No, it was fine. Mostly. Reading it again I got the jist of what you were going for. Not an easy language to learn, I'm told.

Also there weren't a whole lot of Sokovian sitcoms one could learn the language from.

And it wasn't like Steven had the number of the Wanda on his world.

I'm fine. Sorry I haven't been responding to messages. Sort of on a whole no-technology retreat sort of thing.

New Asgard was actually surprisingly up-to-date with that sort of stuff, so it was more of a personal choice of Wanda's.

Marc hopes you're all right as well. He doesn't say it but I know what he's thinking. Doesn't hide that one.

I've seen your beard. There's absolutely no reason for anyone to tease you about it.

Honestly, if anything Wanda preferred the beard.

I'm still away, yeah. Not sure when I'll be back.

Oh, right, mail. She did get that occasionally. To be honest those last few weeks in Fandom she had been in such a Darkhold haze she wasn't even sure how she left her apartment.

To be honest I don't even remember if I locked my door or not when I left so if you could check in on the apartment I'd appreciate it.

At least turn the lights off if she left them on so she didn't come back to a huge electricity bill.

I'll definitely check on that! Steve wrote, then frowned down at her other part of the message. She didn't know if she'd locked her door? What had he missed?

Now you were getting a concerned phone call, Wanda. He was a grandpa that way.

It had been so long since Wanda's phone actually rang that it startled her when it actually happened.

"Hey?" Wanda said, in a tone like someone being called to the principal's office.

Is it okay with you if I dress up Jeff as Cupid?

A moment later: Actually, do you think it would be okay with JEFF?

I've dressed Jeff in far worse things and he hasn't complained yet.

Even when he was talking he didn't complain!

Okay good because here was a photo of Jeff now totally dressed as Cupid, because this was more of a forgiveness versus permission thing.

Scott was pretty clueless sometimes, but Wanda being away for as long as she had been already kiiiinda spoke to some kind of Avenger emergency (and no, his feelings weren't hurt he'd been left out, don't be silly) or something more personal.

Wanda smiled at the photo, happy that Scott had taken over from where she left off before she lost her mind a little bit.

Things are good. Nothing to complain about. Except for the heavy food. Asgardians did not believe in a simple salad for dinner.

How's everything there? No disasters?

there was a thing with time travel like right before Christmas. Scott shared. Whole thing was solved by yearbooks, I think.

Scott did indeed still think that was all pretty convenient.

But other than that, it's been quiet. A little confetti-y today, but quiet.

She had the feeling the explanation would make things worse.

Later. Much later. Late enough that a full working day had passed as well as time enough to hang out at the Devil's Nest before heading home - so fuck knew what time it was a universe over and in New Agard besides, a text came in from Marc's number.

I told him not to bother you.

So, yanno. Hi, Wanda.

Texts don't count as bothering, do they? I could just ignore them if I wanted to.

Not that she had the heart to do it often, but still.

Not that the Avengers wanted her help anymore, she was pretty sure.

Given the message she'd sent when leaving town, Marc wasn't putting any money on Avengering being what was keeping her busy these days. But he wasn't going to poke holes in anybody else's secrets.

I'd say get on my plan but a god bitching in your ear isn't fun either.

Be impressed, Wanda. Normally he didn't even hint about the downsides of Khonshu.

Yeah, I gotta say, you haven't made it sound very appealing.

Maybe it was just the god he was stuck with. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad with a nicer god.
